Why We Created LLR Social | Community Cinema & Events in Oxfordshire
There was a time when every village seemed to have something going on.
A coffee morning. A local club. A film night. A regular sport activity. A place where neighbours could meet, families could spend time together and people could enjoy a few hours without travelling miles or spending a fortune.
Over the years, many of those activities have disappeared. Some became too expensive to run. Others struggled for volunteers. Some simply faded away. The world is forever changing and its not all positive. Everyone is busy, rushing around, juggling too much and most things are now online. I am pro technology but I also remember when it was people met and spoke to people rather than by msg or video.
At the same time, many of the activities that remain have become more expensive and less accessible.
Take a family cinema trip. It use to be an occasional event but now it's a frequent activity, with new films released constantly, that is fairly expensive for a two hour activity.
By the time you've paid for tickets, parking, snacks and drinks, it can easily become an expensive afternoon out. Add in a drive to Didcot, Oxford or beyond and what should be a simple treat suddenly feels like a military operation.
We kept hearing the same things from local people:
"There isn't much to do locally."
"It would be nice to have more community events."
"I wish there was somewhere closer."
"Everything is so expensive we just can't do things all the time"
And that's what sparked the idea for LLR Social.
Bringing People Together Again
LLR Social has been created to help bring people together through affordable, local events and activities.
Not everything needs to be complicated.
Sometimes people simply want a reason to leave the house, spend time with friends or family and enjoy being part of their community.
Whether that's a film screening, a cream tea, a coffee morning, a live sports event or something completely different, the goal is the same:
To create experiences that are local, welcoming, easy to enjoy and aren't crazy expensive.
Why Ardington?
Loyd Lindsay Rooms has been at the heart of the community for generations.
Located in the centre of Ardington, it has hosted countless events, celebrations, meetings and activities over the years.
It's a beautiful venue with excellent facilities, free parking right outside the door and accessible access throughout.
Most importantly, it's already a place where people naturally come together.
LLR Social simply builds on that tradition.
What's Coming?
The first project under the LLR Social banner is LLR Cinema Club.
We're working on family movie afternoons, cosy film nights and seasonal screenings designed to offer a relaxed and affordable alternative to a traditional cinema trip.
But that's only the beginning.
We're also exploring:
Community events
Coffee mornings
Cream teas
Live sports screenings (starting with the England v Panama match)
Seasonal activities
Family experiences
The response so far has been incredible.
More than 125 local people have already joined the mailing list before we've even announced our first screening.
That tells us something important.
People still value community.
People still want local activities that they can actually afford.
People still want places where they can come together.
This Is Just The Beginning
LLR Social isn't about creating one event.
It's about creating opportunities for people to connect, of all ages to make memories and enjoy spending time together locally.
We're excited about what's ahead and we're grateful to everyone who has already supported the idea.
